Michigan Association of Counties votes to back the Great Lakes Tunnel
On August 20, 150+ members of the Michigan Association of Counties (MAC) adopted an amendment to the association’s environment and regulatory affairs platform to support the Line 5 replacement and tunnel project.
The action comes after numerous county commissions across the state have acted to adopt resolutions backing the Great Lakes Tunnel.
The amendment reads:
“MAC supports the construction of a tunnel to house a new Line 5 pipeline across the Straits of Mackinac to allow for the safe transport of the fuels necessary to heat our homes and fuel our vehicles, so long as the monitoring and maintenance of the tunnel is adequate to protect our natural resources and waterways.”
The amendment was proposed by Joe Bonovetz of Gogebic County who is also on the MAC board of directors. The amendment was then put to a voice vote of the county commissioners in attendance, needing a simple majority to pass. It was easily
