The Great Lakes Tunnel will make a safe pipeline even safer by moving a portion of Line 5 out of the Straits of Mackinac, deep below the lakebed.
Safety matters to Michigan…
Get the Facts
A study conducted by Michigan state government concluded that the Great Lakes Tunnel reduces the risk of a spill in the Straits to “virtually zero!”
The Tunnel’s concrete lining provides a second containment layer to prevent any leak from ever entering the water.
The Tunnel will be built using technology that ensures no water, soil, or rock enters the tunnel during construction!
Line 5 is continuously monitored for safety. The Great Lakes Tunnel will be, too, before, during and after construction.
Line 5 safely transports 22,680,000 gallons of fuel daily!
The Tunnel is by far the safest transportation option.
Without Line 5 and the Great Lakes Tunnel, it would take:
2,100 tanker trucks traveling back and forth over the Mackinac Bridge – every single day.
90 trucks every hour, every day, traveling completely across each of Michigan’s peninsulas.
800 rail cars traversing the entire state – every day!
With Line 5
Current safety record, 22.68M gallons per day
24 hour monitoring
With the Great Lakes Tunnel
Current safety record, 22.68M gallons per day
24 hour monitoring
PLUS “virtually zero”, additional safety monitoring tools, deep below the lakebed / out of the water, second containment layer
Without Line 5
None of the safety measures
2,100 tanker trucks
90 trucks
800 rail cars
